Background and release

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head" was going to be the lead single from Minogue's 2001 album. The song was written by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis, as they also produced it and was released on the 8 September 2001 in the UK and Australia by Parlophone and Warner Music Group, respectively. The song was released as a physical and digital release worldwide. The song's intro, which says "La La La" is also the title of Minogue's autobiography La La La.

Composition

"Can't Get You Out of My Head" is an up-tempo, dance-pop and nu-disco song with electronic influences.[2] Written and produced by Cathy Dennis, who would later write Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and Britney Spears' "Toxic", and Rob Davis. The song includes an electric piano, swooning strings, blaring electric miaows, and sing-along sections.[3] The song has a tempo of 126 beats-per-minute, and Minogue's vocals range from note of C4to the note of D5.[4]

Critical reception

Rolling Stone listed the song in the "100 Best Songs of the 2000s" at number 45.[5] They described: "The pint-size Aussie disco dolly seduced the U.S. with this mirror-ball classic, chanting that obsessive melody in a sea of "la-la-la" vocals. We've been hearing it at the gym ever since". The list was made by a group of experts musicians, as well as reconigzed singers and bands. The list was compiled by a group of over 100 artists, critics and industry insiders. The Telegraph UK (The Daily Telegraph) listed the song in the "100 songs that defined the Noughties"at number 9, The newspaper described: "Never has a pop song more effectively done what it says on the tin: the Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis-penned single sinks its playground chant of a hook into the brain and just refuses to let go as Kylie sexes it up". Tim Finney from Pitchfork Media listed the song in their Top 500 tracks of 2000's at number thirty seven.[6] He also gave it a positive review. He said, "How did Kylie make one of the decade's finest dance-pop anthems?" He also added, "In the right environment, dancing to 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' traces a shared history of hopeful flirtations, irresistible seductions, inevitable disappointments, and the helpless compulsion to repeat the cycle again."[6] Mike Atkinson from Stylus Magazine listed the song at number twenty on their 100 Best Songs Of The Decade.[3] They said, "Like so many great pop records before it, 'Can’t Get You Out Of My Head' represents a graceful collision of contrasts. It is both participative and private, matching perky singalong sections with intimate confessions, worried pleas, and moments of blissful surrender."[3]

Slant Magazine gave it a positive review, and listed it on their Best of the Aughts: Singles at number three.[7] They said, "It still sounds like a future where everyone's coked up, wearing slinky dresses, driving sleek cars too fast on the autobahn en route to the coolest party in the world—and it still lives up to its title's promise."[7] Chris True from Allmusic gave it a positive review. He compared it to the previous Light Years work, saying, " 'Cant Get You Out of My Head' is a sparse, mid-tempo dance number that pulses and grooves like no other she's recorded, and nothing on Light Years was as funky."[8] NME listed it on their 100 Tracks of the Decade at number seventy-four.[9] They said, "Reaching Number One in over 40 countries, 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' may not have been the last decent song that this Neighbours alumnus released, but it is arguably still her best."[9] In October 2011, NME placed it at number 83 on its list "150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years".[10]

Music video

Background and conception

The accompanying music video for "Can't Get You Out of My Head" was directed by Dawn Shadforth. It shows Minogue driving towards a futuristic city and back-up dancers in various futuristic costumes dancing in a highly stylized manner. It then focuses on Minogue in a sporty outfit, after which she is seen with other dancers in a computer-generated futuristic city. Her white, hooded costume, with plunging necklines and revealing slits, was widely discussed both for its fashion style and for Minogue's overt sexual posturing. The outfit was created by London designer Fee Doran, working under the label Mrs Jones. Lastly, she appears with a curly hairdo in a short, sixties-inspired shift-dress covered with overlapping pieces of ribbon. Kylie had originally intended to wear a similar dress from Tom Ford's A/W 2001 collection for Gucci, covered in small panels of fabric. The sample size, however, was too large for her, and therefore Baker and team recreated the dress. In his book La La La, William Baker conceded that the robotic dance within the video was purposely developed to give Minogue an association with a dance the way Madonna had developed an association with Vogueing, he felt that at this stage in her career it was important for Minogue to set trends and not follow them, just as Madonna had before her.

Synopsis

The video begins with Kylie driving over a futuristic bridge and into a metropolis. As Minogue continues driving, scenes of her are shown wearing a white skirt and shirt while her and her dancers perform robotic dance moves. As the chorus ends, the video moves to Minogue wearing an exposing white outfit as she sings the song. Going into the second chorus, Minogue is shown wearing the same outfit in a white room with several background dancers wearing red suits and cylinder hats, as they begin doing a dance routine to the song. The video then moves to her in a sparkling silver dress dancing on top of a building. As her dancers come in, she begins dancing with them. The video ends with Minogue walking across the roof top while she shakes her hair.
